Advertisment

Postby Kaplowitz on Sun Apr 06, 2008 3:04 pm

I think that a simple banner like this would get loads of visitors to the Map Foundry. A bunch would just say "Cool map!" and leave, but we would get a couple who would stay and help out.

We could have it over My Games, Join a Game, Start a Game, Game Finder, and the home page. There could be a setting to turn it off.

I think the reason as to why people dont come here, is because they dont know it exists!

I think the foundry should be advertised more... subtly.

Yes, a little more subtlety, but definitely needs an advert in a more public venue than Forum.

Perhaps the Map Foundry need indexing as number 1 instead of number 10 in the Board Index.

Alternatively, the Map Foundry could be a sub-forum of the General Discussion Forum....where there are lots of visitors.

Some advertising as stated above certainly would help.

Thankfully, bryguy, I don't believe that to be true.

a lot of threads in the foundry go offtopic from time to time. and that's in our current situation. imagine dragging 500 more people in here #-o

i for one don't think advertising is needed. if people want to contribute they can find the foundry with ease. if they don't then they stay away
the foundry has far less threads and posts than the chatter box and the flame wars and yet those are bellow the foundry. people choose to go past the foundry and into the chatter box. we don't need to drag them in here. [-X

Well, I do agree that we don't want just anybody in here. But we wouldn't be forcing anybody to come; participation in the foundry would obviously still be optional. Plus, there are a lot of people on CC that are not aware of the Foundry, probably because they're not even aware of the forum at all. I suspect there are also many who are aware of the forum (and probably the foundry as well), but who are too shy to post. Maybe advertisement of the Foundry isn't what we need, but advertisement of the forum itself. But like I said, it shouldn't be so in-your-face as what Kaplowitz posted.

when i joined CC nobody told me about the forums or the foundry, i came i saw i liked it i stayed i made maps. plain and simple. if people want to get involved and want to help they don't need banners to tell them where to find us.

i would agree on a forum advertisement but not banners or stuff like that, simple make the button bolder or add a little something to differentiate it from the other buttons in the top row.

i really don't want to see a banner asking people to come to the foundry because the very next day all the map threads will be filled with stupid posts like:

it's great
lolzor i l0v m@pz
wow

not to mention the huge number of wannabe map makers that will start dozens of map threads that will die in 30 minutes.

Lack'll never put up an obtrusive banner such as that one. The only way we can 'advertise' is keeping that one topic in GD towards the top, and perhaps we'll drag a few random people to come on by.

That said, you personally can help the Foundry. If you play games with people, why not invite them to come visit the Foundry? Maybe give them a link to a particular map, and have them post their thoughts. Give them some direction. Don't go overboard, spamming games, but if you invite people, perhaps they'll come. Or perhaps if you see a poster in the Strategy/QA/Bug Reports forum asking about a particular map, give them a PM and tell them to stop by.

Those kind of things may seem small, but they have a great snowballing effect.

You can also come into Live Chat and ask for opinions. Several mapmakers have done this to get opinions.

this seems like a very good option

although, I tried to go into live chat a couple days ago and apparently there are different rooms. I'm not sure how many rooms there are or how to move around. I guess I need a live chat tutorial.

Ask and ye shall receive...

viewtopic.php?f=57&t=26584

ALthough now, chat is a weebit broken, so you might have to click the world icon at the bottom to connect if you come in on a blank room. This will put you in Callouts. Then just type /join Social, hit Enter, type /join Social again and voila, you're finally there. Yes a PITA, but we have to deal right now until lack fixes it.

Social is the room you want for map discussions. Callouts is only for setting up games.
