Limited Edition Maps

I'm sure I started a topic on this earlier today, but it seems to have vanished??
Anyway, I've been contemplating the possibility of creating some sort of limited edition map, maybe for Christmas or something, that would go live for play in November, for example, and then be taken down at the start of the new year.
If it's do-able, then I guess we could have some sort of competition to design the CC Christmas 2008 map, or something...
...What do people think of this idea?

Christmas is the ideal topic for such a map. Go for it!

If the map is good then people will just want it to be around longer
If the map is bad then it's a big waste of time
I think this idea is...I don't like this idea.

me like the idea,
but all the work that goes into the map would be wasted,
and the XML, would they be doing the XML for nothing?
or only do XML if it gets picked?
then theres a rush to do it and then there may be some mistakes,
-
and the people who make the maps will want their hard work to go to something, i.e go to live play, so it is a waste of time and effort

I agree with DiM.
If it is good enough to play, it should be able to stay. No reason to kick the map out just because the season is over.

I said a couple times that you should get the halloween map going again. the art was really good. The continents just needed to be distinguished better. Still have that image?

good idea.. but just imagine how much work goes into making the map, and then image after 2 months of play it's gone... Whoah!! Not my map baby! Maybe a cheezy map that didn't take 3-4-5 months to quench.

all of the "contestants" would demand that their map go in the foundry to be played later wouldnt they?
if my map was live playabel and i had worked on it, i would hate it if they trashed it!!

I hope you start that back up. Like I said the continents just need to be more distinguishable.
The spider being needed for the continents is a good idea. Or maybe make it something like Alcatraz where you get a bonus of +1 with the spider for each continent held.
Maybe keep the look of the spider territory with the floor being all the different colours, but make other continents distinguishable by having different colours for territory label text.

I think the idea of Limited Edition Maps could be an interesting Foundry Community Project. Could pick a couple of annual Holidays/Events/Etc...Perhaps with each subsequent year could bring back the old edition maps and put them in play with a new map for the duration.
**Shrugs, eats a banana** Could become a tradition.

I could live with that Andy...let's see if i put Halloween Hollows up this arvo, it would definitely be ready for Halloween.

I don't often comment here in the Foundry because I'm pretty sure I know next to nothing about map design and creation, but I'm with Andy on this one. What if over the next year there were a few maps in development for the following times of year:
1. Halloween
2. Christmas
3. Easter
4. etc, etc, etc.
Then each year there is a 2 or 3 month window where the map is available for play. It would give players something to look forward to and it would give the tournament organizers a new facet to develop. You know, some tournaments for those particular holidays played on those maps......

Andy stole my idea!
I like the idea of having limited edition maps that come back during a season every year -- obviously, since the idea was mine

Some Holiday/Events aren't easily converted to a Map (Easter seems like an obvious example), but as Cairnswk has shown, Halloween can. If the idea has interest, I suggest coming up with a list of Holidays/Annual Events (Earth day, etc).
By the way, having the Community help with the idea list, may be a good way to get more people in the Foundry...

Consider taking the idea out of here.

If you did do this idea you could team up with the Tournament Forum and do a limited map tournament.

It sounds like it could nicely benefit the Tournament forum, yes surely. Perhaps if we could find 4 Holidays/events that are roughly evenly spaced throughout the year--or maybe 3 would work better. In any case, start thinking.

According to Coleman, lack vetoed this kind of idea.
Coleman wrote:Great, I have to rain on a parade.
lack would really prefer it if you didn't have maps with changing xml. This was kind of outlawed along with seasonal maps. Sorry.

If we can garner enough interest, perhaps with the help of the lovely tournament folks, that may sway Lack.
