Conquer Camping

Hey all,

First of all: Merry Christmas!
I've never set foot in the map-making but recently I came up with, what I believe, would be a fun map to play. It would consist of a camping map (tents, caravans, bungalow huts, communal areas, ...), each with it's own bonus when holding all tents or all caravans or ... I'm still thinking of how I could add some extra stuff, something more special to it.

I'm not really an artistic person (but I'll try to get a basic idea drawn as soon as possible), nor do I have any knowledge of XML.

What do you think?

I say draw up a free hand sketch, scan it, then upload it so we can see it. The best reactions stem from pictures, not words.

how can you not like spending you holidays in primitive circumstances such as lack of proper heating, next to no electrical devices, shared facilities, dirty showers, and having to walk through mud in the morning and evening to get in and out of bed, as well as having to walk through the rain in the middle of the night with a faulty flashlight to go to the bathroom, sleeping in a noisy environment, with loud drunk grownups in the late night and noisy little children in the early morning, i mean, come on, what beats a camping?

oh, who am i kidding, i prefer a nice hotel room.

What are you, a couple of sissy boys?

Sure it takes some roughing out but on the plus side you get to see some amazing wildlife, such as this

what?
camping is great. i used to go camping all the time when i was in highschool and a bit of my university years.

spending time outdoors with nobody around you for miles is great. and lots of fun stuff happens. like one time i was at the seaside with a few friends and we set up camp near the shoreline but at a safe distance. that night was a huge thunderstorm but my tent was like a fortress dug in sand, anchored on all sides, supported by some big ass rocks and with a big tarp on top also it was the waterproof type. so in the middle of the night i start hearing some noise like somebody is scratching my tent and i also see it kinda moving. i thought it was some dog or something and went back to sleep. 5 minutes later i hear screams and see flashlights. my buddies were awake and yelling at me to get out and move my tent. apparently the sea advanced a lot and now my tent was under a few inches of water and waves were splashing on it. the tent was impossible to move and if i unzipped the door all the way down water would come rushing in. my tent was already buried a few inches under the beach level, with the few inches the water increased i was looking to something close to a foot of water if i opened the door. so i just kept my head out and prayed the storm would calm down :)
smoked like half a pack till morning. but in the end i was the only one that escaped without moving the tent or getting wet from the rain.

PS: going camping in a camping site sucks.

Not to derail the topic, but you can also go camping while hunting and see wildlife like this after you download the pics from your camera.

Here is a VERY VERY rough sketch of what I had in mind. The wildlife would be like a neutral that resets each time to 3 for example.

I don't literally LOL very often, but that one got me.

Wonder if that genius wound up as prey himself? Really stupid to deer hunt at night.

Camping (especially backcountry) can be an amazing experience. There just isn't enough space in the cities for the mind & body to wander. You'd be amazed how little you need or care for electrical devices, hot showers and other 21st century trappings after you spend a few days with just a tent a warm fire and boundless wilderness in every direction.

But I digress.

I've toyed around with a few camping related map ideas before - the Appalachian Trail for one, National Parks for another. Some day I'd love to do a map that captures the outdoors, so I might be willing to collaborate on a project like this.

However, your sketch doesn't really represent camping to me. A pool and a post office? Looks more like an apartment complex than camping. Any wildlife you see in a place like that ain't so wild after all.

I'd want to go in a different direction. Something set in the woods with tents and campfires and trails instead of walkways, lakes instead of pools.

Or perhaps a map with several types of survival shelters as starting positions and tools strewn through a forest (or multiple terrains?). You could collect tinder, wood and matches (or a bow drill) for a bonus. Collect berries or fish/hunt for food.

I don't know. Just some thoughts.

I am sure the guy who took this shot needed to change his trousers afterwards. That is a funny picture isaiah40.

Now camping can be done lots of ways but to have a camping site like the one Leitz drew would be the worst way to go. IMHO

Setting.
Have it in the woods, on a mountain etc.
Story.
Reach the camp site first.
Lord of the flies - become the ruler.
Friday the 13th - escape the crazed killer.

Throw in a few wandering killers, hobos or wildlife and you get yourself a map that has a story and GP.

Those are some great ideas guys! You're right about my sketch, there are much better ways of represent camping!

Something set in the woods with tents and campfires and trails instead of walkways, lakes instead of pools.

The idea of collecting stuff along the way I prefer less, as I think you'd have to fight neutrals first mostly and I'm not keen on mostly neutral maps when playing. Unless I can think of a way to implement them in the general map, it could be a fun extra.

If you want to stay away from neutrals, how about an American style summer camp. That way you can have the bonus zones set up any way you like. A few killer neutrals like falling of a cliff, wild animal, degrading neutrals like the punishment hut or holding the counsellors. You can get auto deploys from letters from home. The possibilities are endless. Good luck.
