Papua New Guinea [26th February, 2013], [Page 1], [V1.00003]

Map Name:Steve
Mapmaker(s):ManBungalow etc.
Number of Territories: 57
Special Features:No
What Makes This Map Worthy of Being Made: Well, it's not a map that has to be made. And I'm sure it's like many other maps on this site. It's got no odd gameplay mechanics, but I'll show you what's happening. Actually, in part, I'd like to have a map quenched (such as this, which has already had the gameplay stamp {I know it will have to be checked again}, and as such I can get on with the graphics stage if it goes as anticipated) before I try anything more ambitious.

I like it. I liked the last one we had with the comp but he went away.

Why is the map named Steve?
Map names are hard to see in the dark sea areas.
Bonuses?
Thread title.

ManB, can you get these last 2 done soonish or will be forced to move into the melting pot as per guidelines.

ManBungalow wrote:I'm going to try pick this map up if that's okay?

With a different graphics style.

I just want something which will pass the gameplay stage without too much fuss really.

Saw this in the PNG winners thread. I would not bet on an easy ride through the GP section with this one. Things have changed since this one was first made.

Not an update, just something I meant to post earlier:

Everything else I'll address later.

Yes such a shame nrds went away :(

however MB, you have my support for this...and i really like the colours you've chosen....agree with Koontz though writing in some areas is a little hard to read.

Nice work!

If this goes through, it'll be the coolest I've seen water look on a CC map.

Thanks, and it's funny because the water here is basically the same combination of filters I've used in several images before this one, but with liek 2 layers over it to make it all glowy and stuff.

Anyway, update.

I still need to add the bridges in, as per the gameplay image below. And I'm sure I'll change the fonts around at some point.

I'm having difficulty conveying the bonus values. A minimap inset of the whole image doesn't look quite right. Perhaps I could try a few more individual bonus pull-outs floating such as the one I have already. Kinda like the bonuses on Cairns' Pot Mosbi map.

Some minor updates added to the image in the OP.

I like it. I wish ndrs or whoever created the last version was around though, since I'd like to see that style on a map somewhere.

Agreed on this point. I loved the last version. But this one is great, too. Since it seems he gave up for good, I fully support this version. Would love to see it quenched.

Okay, I'm happy enough with this to want to progress.

What do I need to do in order to move to the main foundry?

I will stamp it when it needs to be stamped ManB. Giude lines can be found here. They are the same for everyone.

A couple of things from me, again I ask, why is the form filled out in the OP claiming the name of the map is Steve? Secondly, the CB test I just ran shows the colours chosen run into each other in a very bad way. This will need to be put onto your to do list and sorted.

The only colourblind issue I found was between Milne Bay, Madang and New Britain (resolved here). I've tried using some shadows of the bonuses for clarity, but is it worth it for the clutter? (see image)

However, the green army numbers don't show up well on the green background, so I think I'll revert to the original pastel colours, and I really want to avoid army circles (you can see that I've tried some...and that they're not good).

koontz, I read your guide thread again. Which part of it am I non-compliant with? And your design brief submissions thread doesn't exist anymore.

The map name is Steve because that's my pet name for it. I think it's quite self-evident that the project title is Papua New Guinea.

Nice work, ManB. The map is clear and easy to understand with out a lot of space devoted to a legend, which is nice. Have you considered adding a little more flair or something to the bonus zone titles, so they stand out on the map a little more? I am not sure what you could do though.

Anyways, great work.

Thanks Andy.

I'm reviewing the bonus zone titles and how the bonuses are portrayed. I thought maybe some golden curly font like the stuff in the corners for the legend text if I keep it as it is.

But I think I'll see how a minimap looks also.

I like the selection of colours very much. Nice job
Mountains could use some graphic developments
Also i think u could find a nicer font for "continent" names

Once again Newb here so take what I say with a grain of salt :P

In regards to game play I personally think that the southern highlands bonus should only be +1, its a very easy bonus to keep. I am going back and forth on the northern highland bonus as well, they both just seem really easy to hold.

Also the coloring on juti(??) and Kupiano are they part of the same bonus? If not they are to close in color in my opinion.

Hey guys, I replied in the old PNG thread when I heard there was interest for a re-make. Totally missed this new thread!
Looks good MB :)

Please close this and refer to the ndrs thread.

At the very least I've learned a few things from my experimentation with this map draft, which may come into a new map project I like the idea of.

ManB, I applaud your sacrifice, but I am going to leave this here for a bit, lets make sure the other one is going somewhere.

Other than the recycling box it's going nowhere. Unfortunately I guess we have to wait until October for ManB to pick this back up.
