Mapmaker badges

Postby mibi on Wed Apr 09, 2008 5:41 am

One way to get more people in here and more comments etc is to perhaps, award mapmakers with maps in play a small badge under their forum name, similar to the mods, multi hunters, cartographers etc, only smaller in scale and scope.

This way, it would give users an extra incentive to see their map through and it would be a subtle and non-intrusive way to invite other posters to the foundry when they see a few other posters with the badge. The badge could also link straight to the foundry as well.

I think it's a good idea, distinguishing the map makers among, us if they so choose.

firstly, would this draw people away from "new map-makers"?

and what would you have to do to get one?
how many maps quenched?

you would need one map in play, and i don't see how it would draw people away from anything, even established map makers are having a hard time getting comments.

as long as i get 1 map in play, and if i get a sign, i support the idea

lol, i fully support the idea, but so many people are making maps now, wouldnt it get to the stage that everyone - or most - in the foundry would have a badge?
or would you have ranks, like bronze silver, gold, either depending on the amount of maps made, or your maps being voted upon by the foundry users so you can get an according badge?

Well then they can aspire to be a mod or a mapper. Getting a map published should be enough for a mapmaker. If you guys want badges to make you feel special, make them yourselves and add them to your avatar/signature.

but then thats not official

anyone could do that and claim that position,

i dont really see how it would be of use though, or draw people into posting on threads that are started by people with badges..

One key difference between mapmakers and average joe forumer with 5k posts: mapmakers increase the vitality of CC. Without new maps, we'd still be back with a small handful of good-looking but eventually boring maps. Mapmakers perform a vital function for the site as a whole, injecting new ideas on a consistent basis. Mapmakers that see their ideas through to completed ideas deserve recognition for their efforts, for without them CC would not be as popular as it is.

I cant see any reason for NOT giving under appreciated site CONTRIBUTERS something more to aspire to other than "the power that be not wanting to". Map makers and tournement organisers give alot to the community but I feel they are given alot less than they deserve.

This badge could be enought to give a little more incentive to CONTRIBUTE to the community. After all alot of what makes the site is what the community give for very little in return. Yes these people done need it, but remeber they also dont need to run tournements or make maps but those are all part of the building blocks of this site.
What do you know about map making, bitch?

It's not about feeling special. I think official recognition, in the form of a badge, would draw more people to the foundry. People always aspire to have those little icons of official recognition, whether it be an @,+, or forum badge. It would increase forum participation as well as foundry awareness.

However, I don't expect you to understand.

I think wicked has it out for this forum. :|

But I like your idea mibi, and if the medal functionality is already available with a phpbb script, then why not implement it? You've already got tons of admin badges..

Why not add something extra for the members who spend hours and hours of their lives making cc a better place?

Medals are BETA at the moment... hence why I can't see them being added just yet.

Well, doesn't Lack give you a token of appreciation still for every map completed? Isn't your name splayed out on every map you created? I don't think badges will go over well, since they'll only be confused for mods. It's bad enough we have chat mods getting PM'd about forum issues, and mapper mods getting PM'd about non-map issues, etc.... Something like this would only add to the confusion. If you're doing it for the recognition, then I personally think you're doing it for the wrong reasons, but I guess you can always make your name bigger on the map! ;-)

Seems like your the ONLY person against this. Like the classic touch up why dont we listen to the majority ;)

HAHA!! or ya could've listened to me inthe first place about the classic, as I obviously was speaking for majority.

I'm not against it per se, just wondering what it would do other than stroke egos? The original reason was to get people in the map foundry, and I honestly don't see how that would happen...still don't. That said, Twill is all about making everyone feel special no matter what, so I'm sure he'll go gaga over this idea.

are you suggesting gimil that tournament organisers also get these badges ? it would not be fair to give it to one and not the other imo.
