Feeling sad.

Postby jonesthecurl on Thu Sep 25, 2025 12:22 am

The other day, idly searching through Fb for people I'd lost touch with, I discovered an old friend. I was about to message her when I noticed her last post was 10 years old. I did a search and found she was dead, and probably died of multiple drug-induced strokes, while living alone with nobody to check on her.
Damn.

I am in contact with a FB friend from childhood. He shared some photos and I realized that of the some 10 persons in the photos that 3 are dead. That too is SAD. Life goes on, and some die. Death and taxes, you know.

There was another similar realization. One of my former students shared a photo with me and, as she was telling me most of those in the photo (by name) she pointed out that about 3 of them (around 40 years old) have now passed away. Also SAD.

And life goes on. I see life going on as I contemplate my 4 grandchildren (and their cohorts) growing. My 5 year old granddaughter was given a Kindergarten Kick-Off by her Mom. The sign at the gathering said "Class of 2038." I had not thought much about life beyond 2033 when Social Security reaches a critical point.

Some of the key things for me are to enjoy each day and each moment, take the opportunity to help someone, and be kind to those we encounter.

(And then there are those who need a course correction, as we encounter here in this and other Forums. Should I call that SAD, too?)

Yeah, more and more people I used to know are dead. Still a minority at this point, but getting larger.

And, yeah, some that I kept planning to visit, and never got around to.

I know lots of people, and I use Facebook to keep up with some. We cannot keep up with all those we know, so cherish your Family and those Friends who are really special. And if I encounter someone I know, I try to spend Quality Time (as brief as it may be) with them to "catch up" and re-connect.

My mother is older and in declining health. She has lost nearly all friends her age; she is an introvert and chose not to engage much with many others. When I visit with her, she reminisces often, mostly about her children and my dead Dad. I try to get her to laugh as we reminisce; crying and being mournful for lost family and friends is easy for most, so Laughter is important, I think.

There are a few people I know, especially women with no children of their own, who KNOWS LOTS about LOTS of people. I am NOT one of those, but my memory is still good. So, I try to engage with persons in a meaningful way, recalling (what I consider to be) important details about them, especially their names and their family members and/or close friends.

I think too, it is important "exercise" one's brain, so I try to learn new things about what I teach (Chemistry, Physics, Science, Scripture, and Ethics/Philosophy). At the moment, learning the Krazy Kingdom map is a bit of a challenge. I am also calculating the weight of 1 cubic meter of water. (I computed the value AND confirmed it by using online resources a bit over 2,200 pounds, btw, if you want to know.)

A kilogram is defined as a litre of water. A cubic metre is 1000 litres, so 1000 kilograms, which as you say is very roughly 2200 pounds, or more closely 2250.

That's what is sometimes called a "metric ton", or just "tonne" in some countries.

Sorry, not trying to be a smartass. Just a helpful aside...:)

Duk, so you mean 2205* and NOT 2250 pounds? I did the calculation already, before my previous post.

*2204.62 pounds, assuming g = 9.80 m/s^2

btw1: to keep this smartass thing going., let's do a deeper dive :D

btw2: kilograms measures mass and pounds is actually a measure of FORCE, not mass. One slug of mass is about 32 pounds of weight

the slug is the base unit of mass in the foot-pound-second (FPS) gravitational system of the Imperial and U.S. customary units.

Yeah, 2205 not 2250.

Yeah, I get that pounds is a measure of weight (mass X gravity), not mass alone like the kg. Still, as long as we're staying on earth at the surface, it's close enough.

But shouldn't you be weighing salt water since it represents over 95% of Earth's water?
